Most travellers leaving Luang Prabang turn south — back to Vientiane, or east toward Vietnam. But there is another road. It begins on the Mekong, moves upstream through forest and mountain, crosses a border that few tourists ever use, and ends in Nan Province — Thailand’s most protected, most overlooked, and most quietly spectacular corner.
This is an example of a six-day journey from Luang Prabang to Visama Explorer Nan — a route that crosses two countries, two cultures, and one river that ties them together.

DAY 1 Arrival in Luang Prabang

The journey begins the moment you land. Luang Prabang’s airport is small and unhurried — a fitting introduction to a city that has managed, against considerable odds, to remain exactly itself. After clearing immigration and collecting luggage, your guide meets you in the arrivals hall and transfers you to your hotel.
The rest of the day is yours. Walk the peninsula. Sit at a café on the Mekong. Let the pace of the place work on you. The night market along Sisavangvong Road is one of the best in Laos, and the noodle stalls along the river are better still.

DAY 2 Pearl of the Mekong

Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage city — which means exactly what it should: that what you find here has been worth protecting. This morning reveals why.
Your guide meets you at 8:30am for a walking tour through the historic peninsula. The first stop is Wat Xieng Thong, a 500-year-old temple whose gilded façade and intricate mosaics represent the highest expression of Luang Prabang’s architectural tradition. Nearby, Wat Sene and Wat Mai offer quieter, more intimate encounters with the city’s spiritual life.
The tour continues to the National Museum — formerly the Royal Palace — and on to Phousi Hill. The climb is 328 steps. The view from the top makes every one of them worthwhile. Approximately 6 hours.
One Fine Evening
In the late afternoon, your guide takes you to the Mekong riverbank for a game of Petanque — a sport the French left behind that Lao people have made entirely their own. Over wine or local rice whiskey, your hosts share stories of the city’s origins, accompanied by the traditional Lao Khene instrument — a handmade bamboo mouth organ. Approximately 3 hours.

DAY 3 Kitchen, River & Temple

Morning: Home Cooking on the Mekong
At 8:30am, your guide takes you to a local fresh market to meet Mrs. Noy — chef, instructor, and host for the day. After exploring the stalls, you board a boat to cross the Mekong to her family’s home. This is not a cooking school. It is someone’s kitchen, and the food you make in it is eaten with the family.
Afterwards, the boat continues downstream through working villages where river weed snacks, rice crackers, and Mekong delicacies are made by hand. The return journey is taken slowly, on the water, with a glass of Lao rice whiskey. Approximately 6 hours.
Afternoon: Baci Ceremony & Meditation with Monks
At 4:30pm, a private Baci ceremony — the Lao ritual of spiritual blessing — takes place in a local home. From there, you are taken to a hidden temple rarely visited by foreign travellers, where monks teach the fundamentals of meditation and invite you to join their evening chanting. A guide translates. You return at around 6:00pm, quieter than you left. Approximately 1.5 hours.

DAY 4 The Mekong — Luang Prabang to Pakbeng

This is the day the journey opens up. Your guide collects you at 6:30am for the transfer to the pier.
At 7:00am, the boat departs upstream — moving against the current, the way travellers on the Mekong have been moving for centuries. A continental breakfast is served on board. The first stop is Pak Ou Caves, set into the limestone cliffs where the Nam Ou River meets the Mekong. Thousands of Buddha statues — placed by pilgrims over generations — fill the chambers in the rock.
A traditional Lao lunch is served on board as the boat continues upstream. In the afternoon, a cooking demonstration introduces the traditional dessert Khao Tom Muk Khouay — sticky rice in banana leaf. The boat arrives in Pakbeng before sunset.

DAY 5 Into the Forest — Mekong Elephant Park
Full day ethical elephant sanctuary · Pakbeng
After a morning crossing of the Mekong, the day is spent entirely at the Mekong Elephant Park — a sanctuary built on genuine animal welfare principles.
Guests move into pristine primary forest to observe the resident elephants in their natural habitat — following jungle trails at a respectful distance, watching the herd forage, interact, and on their own terms, wade into the shallows. There is no riding, no bathing compelled by schedule. The elephants set the pace.
Lunch is a Lao set menu from the sanctuary’s own botanical garden. The afternoon brings purpose-driven activities: crafting vitamin balls for the herd, harvesting fresh produce, or exploring the compound with resident artisans — blacksmiths, weavers, and bamboo craftspeople whose skills exist here as living practice, not exhibit. The day ends with a lesson in the mahouts’ daily health routines before a boat transfer back to Pakbeng.

DAY 6
The Crossing — Pakbeng to Visama Explorer Nan

After breakfast, your guide meets you at the hotel for the final leg of the journey — and in many ways, the most quietly dramatic one.
A scenic 1.5-hour drive from Pakbeng brings you to the Thai–Lao frontier at Ban Huay Kon. Your guide handles the crossing formalities on both sides. The border sees almost no tourist traffic — just
forested hills, a modest immigration building, and the particular stillness that exists where one country ends and another begins.
What follows is a 1h45 overland transfer through the highlands of northern Nan Province. The road narrows. The valley opens. Limestone peaks rise on either side, rice terraces step down to the valley floor, and the mist clings to the ridgelines like something placed there deliberately. You left Pakbeng this morning. By early afternoon, you are somewhere else entirely.
